We successfully completed Stage 1 of the new Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at the John Hunter Children’s Hospital. This stage features the new Special Care ICU, consisting of clinical spaces, a family wing, and dedicated palliative care spaces. The expanded facilities have significantly enhanced the ability to deliver modern healthcare in a family-centred and efficient clinical setting, creating an environment that prioritises both families and clinical efficiency.
Home to innovative neonatal healthcare, this project has not only met but exceeded expectations, providing a nurturing and supportive space for families. Our design was met with overwhelmingly positive feedback from staff and families alike, validating the success of our innovative design. The successful completion of Stage 1 marks a significant milestone, and we are grateful to have had opportunity to contribute to the advancement of healthcare.
We placed a strong emphasis on incorporating elements inspired by nature and utilising colours, materials, and textures that evoke a sense of the natural world. The colour palette transitions from greens to blues, while timber finishes and large-scale wall imagery, featuring local scenes and plants, further contribute to the natural ambiance. Lighting played a crucial role in the planning process, with a focus on incorporating indirect and natural lighting throughout the unit whenever possible.
