EJE worked closely with HNELHD and other key stakeholders including staff, patient representatives and members of the local Aboriginal community to ensure that their needs and feedback were incorporated in the design of a Palliative Care Family Room in the John Hunter Children’s Hospital Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.
The EJE team worked to develop a design that met the requirements to provide acute medical care while hiding this aspect from the view of families entering the space.
Creative solutions were developed to harness space in the design including bespoke furniture design, and careful selection was undertaken of colours and fabrics to provide warmth and to support cultural identity.
The end result of this process was the creation of a warm, homely and culturally sensitive space for families to come together and to be supported following the loss of a new born baby.
